The wooden statues of Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra are taken out in three huge chariots or processions that meet the temples and are called chariots. On the morning of the festival, 108 pitches of water are taken out of a well reserved for the occasion, and images of Jagannath and his siblings are washed with reverence and placed in their chariots. These huge, ornate vehicles are dragged from the temple to the Gundicha temple, the summer home of the Lord, about a mile away. After seven days, the chariots return to the temple, where they are displaced and their contents used to make religious relics.

At one time, worshipers threw themselves under the wheels of a chariot as it proceeded in the belief that they would be guaranteed a holy death. Nowadays this practice is forbidden, but people still come to Puri to participate in the procession and feast with the herd. Similar festivals are held in other Indian cities where there are temples dedicated to Jagannath, but attending the procession in Puri is considered the greatest honor.
